Summer Ennui

Okay, okay....I know! It's not summer anymore and what the hell is ennui? Well for your information; (from the French, don'tcha know)
en·nui   /ɑnˈwi, ˈɑnwi; Fr. ɑ̃ˈnwi/
[ahn-wee, ahn-wee; Fr. ahn-nwee]

–noun
a feeling of utter weariness and discontent resulting from satiety or lack of interest; boredom: The endless lecture produced an unbearable ennui.

We are having a heat wave here in Los Angeles, and while I usually love the heat, I was experiencing a lack of accomplishment?..peace?...interest? Maybe this just happens after you come back from travelling? When life returns to it's scheduled programming, and you do indeed have to fix the leaky toilet and pay your bills, etc.; possibly all the same time. And then there were the elections...Sometimes I just wait, and this "ennui" passes not unlike the weather, other times it is more deep rooted and I get cranky like a 3 year old without cheerios.
I like to have a few tried and true methods of shaking off the blues, in case of emergency. They are as follows:

1. Make yourself a nice cocktail. I don't mean drink a fifth of scotch, I mean mix for yourself one of those lovely picture perfect drinks that contain 5 different liquids, culminating in an explosion for your taste buds. Gin with a hint of rose, black cherry fruit juice, spicy ginger ale, and a wedge of lime. There! I think I just invented something! I will call it a Gin Moxie...:)

2. Dream a little/Lollygag. And by this I mean take a long lunch break. Drive for a while just to sing a long to the songs on the radio. Enjoy the sun on your skin and the wind in your face. Try not to burst into laughter when the driver next to you is in awe of your obvious singing skills. Appreciate the silence or lack thereof.

3. Have a good conversation. Possibly about nothing at all. Snuggle with someone if you can, cat's are also excellent for this! (Dogs are too, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention my personal pets)

4. And last, but not least...look for a project, something you've been meaning to do, forgot about, or didn't realize you wanted to do. That sense of purpose will carry you right over the blues, to a lovely rose colored day. Or at least a rose colored moment or two. Oh yeah, and then go fix the toilet.

Back from my travels but still striving, Bisous Amy
